Whitman Browne was born, and grew up in Butlers Village, Nevis. He became a Pupil Teacher at White Hall School, at the age of 14. After attending teachers’ college in Antigua, 1966 - 1968, he was assigned to the Combermere School. It was during his tenure here in 1970, that the ferry Christena sank, killing almost 250 people aboard. Browne lost students, family, and friends in that tragedy.
During 1971, Browne obtained a scholarship to study at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and was awarded a BA degree in History in 1973. Browne obtained his BA MA and PHD degrees in History and educator from US universities between 1971 and 1984. During that time he worked both in the USA and St. Kitts and Nevis, eventually emigrating to the US Virgin Islands where hestill resides. He has extensive professional experience in the field of education as a teacher, principal, administration and university professor.
During his years in the US Virgin Islands, Browne has continued to work in two other areas of his interests, writing and photography. To date, he has written numerous newspaper columns, and ten non-fiction books including The Christena, The Christena Disaster, The Christena Disaster Revisted, and The Christena Disaster Forty-Two Years Later, as well as From Commoner to King, a book on Robert Bradshaw and Ivor A. Stevens. Two of them are still in the process of being published. There are also ongoing plans to publish some of his photography as picture books or photo albums of the US Virgin Islands and St. Kitts-Nevis.
